When I was younger, my parents got me a chemistry set. I never used it that much because, even though it sounded fun in theory, none of the ‘experiments’ it suggested were that thrilling. Somehow, creating crystals, turning pink liquids blue, and figuring out the pH of a liquid never excited me all that much. I know there is probably a lot more I could have done, but this was pre-internet and it never really grabbed me.
But kids have it way better these days. Hobbyists have started do-it-yourself biology groups, so if you are interested in making GFP yoghurt in your room, you have people who can help out. I think this is pretty sweet.
I saw an article at one point where some grad students built a recording rig at home to do DIY-neuroscience experiments; I’d be pretty pumped to try that (ant neuroscience, here we come!).
